Toxteth Women’s Centre & the Tab Basement!
Fliss’s Story
I have been teaching English and supporting refugees and families claiming asylum in the Toxteth area for over 20 years and recently with the Toxteth Women’s Centre. I wanted to start ESOL classes in Toxteth and had been offered a few venues in Toxteth but they didn’t feel right, it was amazing when we were able to start the classes in the basement at the Tab. I wanted the classes at the Tab and in the basement because over the years I had heard many stories about the youth group that met in the basement there. Many of the prayer supporters at the Toxteth Women Centre had become Christians at this youth group; I longed to see this again. Many of the prayer supporters felt quite emotional when they heard we had started classes in the basement!
The women seem very happy coming to the Tab for classes, interestingly FireFit had offered me space and during the lockdown we moved the classes there, but the women asked when we were moving back to the Tab! A few of the women who attend Toxteth Women Centre have also started coming to the Tab and they feel part of the family here.
